CENTER FOR ADULT EDUCATION MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
The CAE campus is located in the city’s laneways and as a result the organisation uses the city spaces as an extension of their classrooms thus, the conceptual direction for the project began with the idea of the “city as a classroom” as the basis of the aspirational brief from CAE referencing ideas of connectivity, transformation and opportunity.
The existing conditions of the new space provided challenges in designing a modern learning environment which is located on the mezzanine level of an existing city building. The main concern of the team was dealing with the fact that the space has limited access to natural light that was further complicated by a deep floor plate, irregular column grid and in some areas, a low ceiling height. Colour has been used throughout to identify functional areas combined with lighting and furniture design that seamlessly merge into one another.
The modern design concept “city as a classroom” was formed as a key component of the aspirational brief for the new space working together with Gray Puksand Architects, some of the design elements used are glass wall partitions promoting transparency and bringing the space up to date, great selection of furniture with pops of color blended in with the neutral colors used in the space.
